"SIOUX" - Black Eyed Sioux. PtHA #1981 Black minimal white Sabino Overo pinto pony mare, unknown breeding. Hunter type 13.3 1/4" hh.
"Sioux" is the first larger pony mare that we bought to utilize in our pony breeding program. She was found through Karen Clark of Rainbows End Farm in Buffalo, MN. When Sioux's 1996 1/2 Shetland Tobiano pony colt by Red Rock Master Jack(AJ's sire)was weaned, she was shipped from MN to MT.
In March of 1997, we lost her 1/2 Arab colt that was overly large at birth. One month later found us on the road to NC. Sioux rode in the stock trailer next to "AJ" behind another mare ("Sunny") and her yearling horse bred daughter ("Rainy"). They made the trip fine and started shedding all their blizzard protection hair immediately in the 100 degree weather we arrived to.
Several NC veterinarians looked over the xrays of her neck, and said that she could probably be ridden, so we did. She was a fun trail riding mare as long as you didn't force her to turn her head to the left ( her head was permanently fused slightly to the right - possibly a "pull down" injury while standing tied). She had an awesome walk, a trot that started out rough and then smoothed out, and a nice lope.

She went on to produce a total of 5 1/2 Shetland "AJ" babies for us. Before she arrived, she'd had 2 "Jack" foals ("Jack" is the Shetland stallion who sired "AJ").
